A Dog Guards A 5-Year-Old Boy With Down Syndrome Who Has Escaped From His Home

Dogs are extremely devoted and protective pets, especially around small children. There have been numerous reports of children going missing from home, only to be found with their devoted dog by their side, keeping them safe.

That was the case recently when a 5-year-old boy went missing and was found safe and sound thanks to his guardian German shepherd.

On April 2, Houston cops responded to a report of a little boy walking along train tracks with only his dog by his side. Sgt. Ricardo Salas of the department claims he discovered the 5-year-old had Down syndrome after he was about a half-mile from his home. He also noticed Alejandro, a German shepherd, following him around as a defender.

“Witnesses told me that the dog was with the small boy when they found him. As I went away with the youngster, the dog followed,” Sgt. Salas wrote on Twitter. “This dog was his angel and guardian.”

“It seems like the dog sensed something was up, he knew the boy wasn’t supposed to be roaming around and he ended up following him,” he told the Houston Chronicle. “He was fiercely protective of the child and wouldn’t look away from him.”

Despite the presence of the cops, Alejandro remained vigilant, never letting his human escape his gaze.

“Everywhere I went, it seemed like the dog was following me.” Salas continued, “When I put the kid in the car, the dog jumped inside the driver’s seat with him,” adding that the dog “wasn’t barking, it wasn’t intimidated.”

The officers received another call shortly after, informing them that the boy was Jose, a missing child. The boy’s mother, Jasmine Martinez, told Click 2 Houston that she and her 5-year-old son had fallen asleep together, and when she awoke, Jose had gone off.

Thankfully, the youngster only received minor scrapes and bruises as a result of the incident. Jose’s family is grateful, but not surprised, that their loyal dog saved him when he was in peril.

“We’ve had Alejandro since he was a puppy, and he’s always been a guard dog.” “I was not surprised when they stated he was walking with him the entire time,” Jose’s sister, Samantha Muoz, told Click 2 Houston.

According to police, the family will not face charges, and the mother is now installing child safety locks to prevent this from happening again.

Sgt. Salas was taken aback by the “degree of loyalty this dog had to this small boy,” and believes it was crucial that the dog was keeping an eye on him because the railroad tracks are usually very busy.

Thank goodness for this dog to protect this little guy – Alejandro, you’re a fantastic dog!
